The Kurdish exodus from the North of Iraq after the Gulf War in 1991 was a particularly grim affair. Thousands of families were forced to flee from major towns such as Erbil and Sulaymaniyah to the Iranian and Turkish borders of Iraq, fearing persecution at the hands of the Iraqi dictator during one of the worst ethnic genocides in modern human history.
TOHL’s first major investor, Ary Hussein, had his own part in this story. As an 11 year old visiting his homeland from his adopted home in the Netherlands, Ary was separated from his family and forced into a refugee camp on the Turkish border with his uncle. Fearing the worst and assuming that his parents had been deceased, the 11 year old was thrust into the most difficult passage of his life, where children like him were fighting starvation and thirst just as they were the local chaos and lack of security. Forced to melt the winter ice for drinking water, and circle with other kids to guard all corners of possible attack, Ary, like the rest of the people stuck on the border, were forced to survive between homes that they could not return to and a neighbor that would not accept them. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4NnLURSHDE)
Ary, like many others survived the incident and was able to sculpt a life for himself that helped him overcome the difficulties of his past. In TOHL, the same 11 year old from his past re-emerged and saw the opportunity to help in ensuring that history did not repeat itself.
TOHL, like any business venture, is ultimately founded by humans and the success and growth of the venture will be determined eventually by the character, experiences, and personalities of the team behind it. TOHL has been inspired by individuals that are motivated to alleviate human suffering in the time of crisis and establish a revolutionary new field of mobile infrastructure. We are confident that more individuals like Ary Hussein will find promise in the goals of TOHL and our team is confident that TOHL has the potential to ensure that an eleven year old child never has to thirst for clean water over 2 weeks again.
